CHARLOTTESVILLE—The National Federation of State High School Associations annually recognizes outstanding high school music, speech/debate and theatre educators, supervisors and adjudicators. One educator can be nominated by each state in each category for this honor. Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct and carry the endorsement of their respective state high school association. An NFHS awards committee reviews these nominations and selects award winners. Criteria for evaluation includes: Overall contributions, service both to curricular and co-curricular activities, organization and continuance of an activity program, significant and on-going contribution to the field and contributions to the profession both in and out of the state.
As such, Mark Ingerson from Salem High School recently received the NFHS Outstanding Speech and Debate Educator Award.
“I deeply appreciate the recognition. I’ve coached now for 23 seasons and had well over 250 students come through the speech and debate program, helped host or run over 100 tournaments, so it’s been a long time and a lot of hard work. I’ve had memories of watching students make friends, improve their skills, gain confidence, and win state championships that will last a lifetime,” Ingerson said.
Ingerson has built an unparalleled legacy, leading his team to 18 consecutive Virginia High School League state championships. Known for his innovative tournament structures and mentorship of students and coaches, Ingerson has elevated speech and debate in Southwest Virginia, according to the Virginia High School League. His unwavering dedication to fostering student growth and success makes him an exceptional educator and leader, the league went on to note.
Dr. Kelly Linkenhoker, principal at Salem High School, said, “With 18 VHSL state championships, Mark Ingerson has set an unparalleled standard of excellence, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of Salem High School. Beyond his VHSL achievements, Mr. Ingerson plays a vital role in the broader success of SHS. He tirelessly mentors new teachers, guiding our mentor cohort with wisdom and dedication. As an educator, his AP students consistently achieve top results, setting a high bar for students and staff. Through his quiet leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence, he inspires our staff and prepares our students for success beyond our doors. Salem High School is lucky to have Mr. Ingerson as part of our team.”
Superintendent Dr. Curtis Hicks added, “Mark Ingerson exemplifies everything you want in a teacher and coach. His dedication to his students is unmatched, and his ability to refine instruction based on their needs has led to extraordinary achievements in both the classroom and on the stage. His commitment to fostering confidence, critical thinking, and excellence has not only shaped individual students but has also elevated speech and debate at Salem High School and beyond. This recognition is a testament to his passion, leadership, and the lasting impact he has on his students, the Salem community, and speech and debate across the Commonwealth.”
