The Roanoke College baseball team exploded for 30 combined runs in their doubleheader in Harrisonburg last Saturday to sweep ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite. The Maroons won the opener, 16-13, then took the nightcap, 14-6.
In the first game EMU struck first in the bottom of the second, but RC responded with five in the top of the third. The Maroons went on to score in each of the next six innings to finish off the game.
Hayden Giordano hit for the cycle for the first time in his career. The sopho-more had a career high of five hits and was one shy of his career mark with his five RBIs. Giordano’s two home runs made it the first multi-home run game of his career and brought his season total to three. He also also tallied three runs.
Parker Stallard had a grand slam for the Maroons and Nate Prince had four hits.
Thomas Burgess earned his third win of the year, going six innings and strik-ing out five. Freshman Nick Capps got his first career save after working three innings.
In the second game Roanoke kept their offense rolling and scored in all but one inning to make their mark and secure the sweep in game two. Trevor Orth advanced to 3-0 on the season after striking out two in three innings of work and not allowing a baserunner. Isaac Brooks earned his third save of the campaign to tie the program record in career saves with 10.
With the sweep Roanoke improved to 11-9-1 on the season and 4-2-1 in ODAC games. This week the Maroons have games at Averett Tuesday and at Mary Baldwin Wednesday before hosting Lynchburg in a doubleheader Saturday at Calfee Park in Pulaski. That’s scheduled to begin at noon.
