The Glenvar baseball team has been knocking on the door and hopes to soon kick it in. The Highlanders lost two close ones to open their Three Rivers District schedule and have yet to win a game after six tries.
Last Thursday in Stuart the Highlanders participated in a rarity, a double no-hitter. Cale Vaughan threw a no-hitter for the Highlanders and Glenvar failed to get a hit in a 2-0 loss. The Cougars scored two runs in the first on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly around two Glenvar fielding errors. The next six innings were hitless and the Highlanders came home with a very tough loss.
On Tuesday at home the Highlanders fell to Carroll County, 4-1. Glenvar led 1-0 into the fifth but the Cavaliers scored four times in that inning. Cam Feazell pitched and allowed just two earned runs in five innings while striking out seven. Gray Hutchison pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Glenvar had just two hits, one each by Rhett Henderson and Camden Summerville. In six losses the Highlanders have been no-hit twice and held to two hits on two other occasions.
“It’s not for lack of effort,” said coach Jeremy Cromer. “Our guys have been putting in the work. They come in before school and stay after practice. We’ve had a tough schedule and I knew we’d struggle early but this is going to pay off late in the season. We’re close to getting over the hump.”
The Highlanders were scheduled to host Salem on Wednesday but results were too late for publication. Next Tuesday Radford comes here.
