
The Salem City School Board met April 8, beginning with a closed session on personnel matters, followed by a public session focused on student recognition, grant approvals, policy updates, and a financial review.
Consent Agenda & Grants Approved
The board approved the agenda and consent items, including minutes from March 20, confirmation of a $200 petty cash balance, and two federal grant applications:
- 2025–26 IDEA Part B Special Education Grant
- 2025–26 Perkins Grant for Career and Technical Education
Student Honors
- PTA Reflections: South Salem Elementary’s Aurelia Sylva earned a State Award of Merit in visual arts (Intermediate Division).
- Girls Basketball: Salem High’s team was celebrated for a 27-3 season, securing River Ridge District titles, Region 4D Championship, and finishing as Class 4 State Runner-Up.
- Speech Team: Resolution #268 recognized Salem High’s 19th consecutive VHSL state title, with 13 students placing in the top three. State champions included Claire Rawlins, Charlie Bain, Lacey Stratton & Bella Poarch, and Rosalie Botos. Coach Mark Ingerson and student manager Kaelyn Henzey were also honored.
Policy Updates
Reviewed First readings of updated policies—aligned with VSBA guidance—covered payroll, benefits, substitute qualifications, leave policies, sanitation, concussion management, and student conduct.
Financial & Program Updates
The Monthly Financial Report showed stable finances across all funds. An overview of 2025 summer programs detailed staffing and academic goals.
Acknowledgments & Closing
The board recognized Workforce Readiness Month, Autism Acceptance Month, and the Month of the Military Child. Personnel actions were approved, with the next meeting set for May 13, 2025.
