Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle School sports team went head-to-head on Monday with Lewis sweeping the ballgames and Glenvar prevailing on the pitch. Lewis won both the baseball and softball games while Glenvar shut out the Wolverines in both boys’ and girls’ soccer.
The baseball game was played at Green Hill Park and Lewis took a 21-5 win over the Highlanders to even their record at 6-6 on the season. Lewis jumped on top early with 10 runs in the top of the first inning. Crayton Boger doubled, scoring two runs, Evan Stroud doubled, scoring one run, Tyler Coe singled, scoring one run, and Coe scored after tagging up. Adam DeWalt then grounded out, scoring one run, Cannon Cowling doubled, scoring one run, Nick Winterer singled, scoring one run, Boger tripled for his second hit of the inning to drive home a run and Stroud got his second hit when he doubled in the 10th run.
Clark Soltis started on the bump for Lewis and surrendered no hits and three runs over one inning, striking out one and walking four. Maddox Burbage started on the hill for the Highlanders. Boger tossed one inning of no-run ball in relief, striking out two and walking two. Lewis finished with 18 hits.
The softball game was played at the Moyer Complex in Salem and the Wolverines also won that one, 13-8, to improve to 7-4-2 on the season. Lewis was down 5-0 in the second inning but rallied for the victory.
Glenvar came out strong, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and adding an additional run in the top of the second, leading the game 5-1 going into the bottom of the third inning. However, Glenvar’s defense committed eight errors and even though Glenvar out-hit Lewis 8-6, the Wolverines capitalized with seven unearned runs.
Daviah Goodman collected three hits in four at bats for Lewis, hitting doubles in the third, fifth and fourth innings. Daisy Robinson earned the win, yielding three hits and three earned runs over four innings while striking out four and walking three. Chloe Freeman appeared in relief for Lewis.
Kherington Jewell went the distance for Glenvar, striking out 10 batters. She was two-for-three at the plate with a single and a triple and McKenna Tice went three-for-four with three singles. With the loss Glenvar fell to 8-13.
Glenvar swept the two soccer games. The boys played their game on the artificial turf at Highlander Stadium and pulled out a 1-0 win in front of the season’s largest crowd. Jaxson Kuzmich scored the lone goal with an assist by Bryson Kuzmich. The back line of Isaac Carroll, Zane Smith and Grayson Washenberger put up their 12th shutout of the season.
With the win Glenvar improved to 15-1 and the Highlanders avenged their only loss, which was to Lewis. The Wolverines are now 8-1-3.
“I’d love to tell you that we played well, and they got lucky, but they beat us on the scoreboard, on the pitch, in passing, in defending and possessing,” said Lewis coach Bob Palleria. “Glenvar was better today. We had a few shots on goal in the second half, but not to the extent they did. Lin Daniel (in goal) was amazing again for us, and he seems to keep us in every game.”
The girls played on the field at Andrew Lewis and Glenvar jumped to a 2-0 lead by the half and finished with a 3-0 win to sweep the season series from the Wolverines. Gabby Barba, Maudie Doolan and Ryleigh Dickerson scored goals for the Highlanders as they improved to 11-1-2. Lewis is now 8-4.
Everyone plays again today as the season nears an end. Lewis’ teams play Central Academy with the softball and girls soccer teams at home and the baseball and boys’ soccer teams on the road. Glenvar takes on Read Mountain with the baseball team at Green Hill Park and the boys’ soccer team at Glenvar. The softball and girls’ soccer will play at Read Mountain.
