The Salem High boys’ soccer team snapped out of a four game slump with two convincing wins last week. Salem won 6-1 at Lord Botetourt on Thursday and 6-2 over Pulaski County at Spartan Field on Friday.

Salem fell behind early at LB but battled back to take a 2-1 lead by halftime. Logan Lavinder scored both first half goals, one assisted by Anthony Rugama and one unassisted.

The Spartans put it away with four more goals in the second half, including a header by Ethan Millard off an Elijah Clark corner kick. Lavinder scored his third of the night, also assisted by Clark, then set up Rugama twice to get assists on the last two.

On Friday at home Rugama scored the first two goals, assisted by Caleb Moshier and then Tyler Gillinger. The Cougars cut the lead to 2-1 by the half but Clark scored quickly in the second half, assisted by TJ Fisher, to make it 3-1. Then Lavinder scored the next three goals, assisted by Rugama and Clark and ending with a penalty kick.

With the six goals in two days Lavinder became Salem’s all-time leading goal scorer and points leader. The Roanoke College bound senior has 55 career goals to break Johnny Hughes’ record of 54 that had held since 2009.

Salem, now 6-4, will host Cave Spring at Spartan Field this Friday night.
