Avery Mangus had a “hat trick” against Pulaski.

The Salem High girls’ soccer team will open the Region 4 D tournament on a roll. Salem won their final five games of the regular season to improve to 11-6 heading into post-season play.

The Region 4D tournament is scheduled to begin on May 28. Salem’s opponent was yet to be determined at press time but coach Justin Applegate expects the Spartans to be on the road for their first game.

Salem ended the regular season Tuesday with an 8-0 win over Pulaski County at Spartan Field. Avery Mangus and Laikyn Funk had three goals each and Aly Price had two. Mangus and Price had two assists each and also recording assists were Funk, Emaleigh Lynch and Emma Elder.

It was the third shutout in a row for the surging Spartans. After downing Christiansburg 2-0 on May 13 the Spartans beat Patrick Henry, 4-0, in Roanoke Friday. Ashley Adkins had two goals and Funk and Elder had one apiece. Karis Guy and Aubrey Thomas split time in the goal.
