Region team tennis tournaments are about to begin for Salem and Glenvar teams but matchups were yet to be official at press time with some big matches still to be played.
The Region 4D team tournaments are scheduled to begin on Friday. Salem’s boys were scheduled to play Patrick Henry on Thursday in their final regular season match.
Salem’s boys beat Hidden Valley at home Monday, 6-3. It was Senior Night for Spartan seniors Grayson Smith, Brody Chastang Kardin Nguyen, UV Singh, Mason Stavoli, Chance Long and Logan Butcher.
The Salem girls played at Patrick Henry on Monday and lost to a strong PH team, 9-0. The girls Senior Night was scheduled for Tuesday against Pulaski County.
Individual tournaments for Region 4D are scheduled for next week with singles quarterfinals and doubles at E.C. Glass on Monday, singles semifinals and finals on Tuesday at John Handley High and doubles semifinals and finals at John Handley on Wednesday, May 28.
The Region C tournaments start next Monday at Radford University. The Glenvar boys will likely play George Wythe in the first round and they still had a big match at Floyd County today. The Highlanders match with Alleghany last Friday was rained out and will not be made up.
“That was too bad as I like their boys and their coach and we have developed a strong healthy competitive relationship over the years,” said Glenvar coach Bob Haynie.
The Glenvar girls will be at Floyd today, and their match with Alleghany was also cancelled. The Highlanders were scheduled to host Radford Tuesday for Senior Night and on Wednesday they had a trip to Hollins University to meet the first year James River team.
