The Salem Red Sox are back home this week after playing a dozen straight games on the road. Salem will host the Delmarva Shorebirds, a farm team of the Baltimore Orioles, for six games from Tuesday through Sunday.
The Sox are glad to be back home after two weeks on the road. That included a six game losing streak as they dropped their last two games in Fayetteville and their first four in Charleston before winning the last two against the Riverdogs, 4-2 and 5-3.
In Sunday’s get-away game Justin Gonzales had three hits and Kelvin Diaz smacked a pair of home runs out of the ninth spot in the order as the Sox beat Charleston in 10 innings. Salem scored a run in the ninth to tie it at 3-3 and plated two in the top of the 10th. Eybersson Polanco picked up the win in relief and Nathanael Cruz pitched a perfect 10th for his second save.
Salem lost Tuesday’s game with Delmarva, 11-9, to fall to 17-22. They came home nine games behind the Carolina Mudcats in the Carolina League’s North Division. At 26-12 Carolina, a Brewers farm team, has the best record in the CL while Columbia leads the South Division at 22-17. Columbia is a Royals farm team.
This week’s homestand is loaded with exciting promotions, including an appearance by the popular “Zooperstars” on Saturday night. Thursday is Game Show Night and Friday is Youth Sports Night with post-game fireworks.
After this week’s series the Sox are off to Zebulon for a six game series with the Mudcats and a chance to make up some ground in the division.
