James Madison University in Harrisonburg will be the site of the Class 1 and 2 state track meets on Friday and Saturday of this week. Glenvar will have several state contenders in the Class 2 meet after a strong showing in the Region 2C meet last Friday.

The Highlanders hosted the meet, starting at 9 am in the morning. The meet was originally scheduled for field events at 10 am and running at noon, but mid-day thunderstorms were predicted so the meet was moved up and run at a quick pace, with all events completed.

“Both the boys and girls had a great turn out on Friday,” said Glenvar coach Neil Swanson. “We only had to contend with one small rainstorm, but the meet went rather smoothly. We have some great runners going up to states next week and their work has been paying off.”

Glenvar’s boys finished second to Floyd County in the team standings. Appomattox won the girls’ region crown with Floyd coming in second and Glenvar third.

The boys had a double winner as Joey Loder swept the hurdles. Joey ran a time of 15.09 in the 110 high hurdles and 38.85 in the 300s.

Colby Thompson was second in the 400, Tre Dawyot was third in the 200, Aldin Smith was third in the 3,200 and Tyler Davis took fourth in the 1,600. Major Mason was fourth in the 110 hurdles and Matthew Johnson was fifth in that event.

In the relays Glenvar had a big day. The 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams both finished first and the 4×100 was second.

In the boys’ field events Tyson Hobbs was second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. Thompson was third in the triple and sixth in the long while Dawyot was fifth in the long jump. Micah Mason took fifth in the pole vault.

In the girls’ meet Sophia Hammersley won the 300 hurdles in 50.05 and took second in the 100 highs. Jade Evans was third in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 while Elle Graffeo was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles.

Third places went to Aiden Beverl in the 200 meters and Anna Hall in the 400. Rayya Bryson was fourth in the 800 and Kailee McDonald took fifth in the 400.

Glenvar’s girls also had a good day in the relays, taking first in the 4×800, second in the 4×400 and third in the 4×100.

In the jumps Hammersley took a second in the triple while while McDonald was third in the high and fourth in the triple jump. Aliya Guzman was third in the pole vault while teammates Graffeo and Lauren Smith tied for fourth.
