The Glenvar soccer teams are both playing for Region 2C championships tonight with a berth in the state Class 2 tournaments in hand. The two Glenvar teams both won their region semifinals by 2-0 scores at the Smith River Complex in Martinsville on Tuesday, locking up spots in the state quarterfinals.
Both teams are defending state champs, and the boys have won the last two years. Tonight’s matches are scheduled for the Smith River Complex, but Glenvar AD Jason Murray was politicking to get them moved to Roanoke College. The girls will be playing undefeated and top-seeded Chatham and the boys will play Radford, who edged Nelson County 1-0 in overtime Tuesday. Glenvar’s boys beat Radford twice this year already, both times by 4-0 scores.
If both games are played at Smith River tonight they’re scheduled to begin concurrently at 6 pm on adjoining fields.
The Glenvar boys are now 19-0 and haven’t lost in their last 57 games. They’ve won 17 games by shutout this season and have outscored their opponents 118-2. Aidan Hylton and Adam Saunders scored goals for the Highlanders in Tuesday’s win over Liberty. Glenvar led 1-0 at the half and outshot the Minutemen, 33-0.
In last Friday’s Region 2C quarterfinal they defeated Floyd, 14-0, at Highlander Stadium in the second game of a doubleheader with the girls. Hylton and Levi King had two goals each and 10 different Highlanders had one goal each as Glenvar also outshot Floyd, 33-0. Parker Doolan had four assists.
The girls opened the doubleheader with an 8-0 win over Appomattox at Highlander Heaven. Camryn Stevens led the Highlanders with six goals.
After Tuesday’s win the girls are now 16-2 and they’ve won their last 15 games in a row.
State quarterfinals for both the boys and girls will be next Tuesday, June 10. Tonight’s winners will get a home game and the losers will travel. The state semifinals and finals are at Roanoke College’s Kerr Stadium on June 13 and 14.
