The Salem Red Sox will be in Salisbury, MD for a six-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds this week. The series opened Tuesday with games scheduled through Sunday.
The Sox and Delmarva, a Baltimore Orioles farm team, are battling to stay out of the basement in the Carolina League’s North Division. Through Sunday Salem was 22-33, 13 games behind the division leading Carolina Mudcats, while Delmarva was 22-35, 14 games out.
Salem hosted the Lynchburg Hillcats for a six game series last week at Salem Memorial Ballpark and the Hillcats won four. The Sox won two of the first three but lost the last three in a row, scoring five runs every game. They fell 8-5 on Friday, 10-5 on Saturday and 6-5 on Sunday.
In Sunday’s game the Sox led 5-3 after eight innings only to have the Hillcats score three in the top of the ninth. Manuel Medina gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits in the inning and was saddled with the loss. Kelvin Diaz hit his fourth homer in the second inning for the Sox.
Salem will be back home next Tuesday, June 17, to host Fredricksburg for six games. That will begin a stretch of 12 straight home games before the Sox hit the road for two weeks with the Salem Fair coming to town.
