A beloved West Salem business is entering a new chapter as the Salem Antique Market prepares for its grand reopening and ribbon-cutting ceremony under new ownership.
The event, hosted in partnership with the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce, took place Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 12 p.m.
Longtime employee Vickie Waldron and her husband, Gene, recently purchased the market and are now leading the charge to preserve its legacy while ushering in fresh ideas. Vickie, who worked at the store for eight years, said the decision to take over the market felt like a natural step.
“My time here allowed me to build strong relationships with both our dealers and customers, and I became deeply invested in the values and vision of the store,” Waldron said. “Owning the market now allows me to continue that legacy and bring even more value to both the West Salem and Roanoke Valley communities.”
The couple shares a passion for antiques and vintage items. Gene brings experience in restoring and preserving historical pieces, while Vickie enjoys discovering hidden gems and the stories behind them.
Since taking ownership, the Waldrons have updated the layout to create a more open and inviting space, added new displays, and reorganized aisles to improve flow for shoppers. The goal, Vickie said, is to balance tradition with innovation.
“We’ve taken the time to preserve the market’s classic elements—like its charming atmosphere and carefully curated antique collections—that so many people know and love,” she said. “At the same time, we see a great opportunity to modernize and expand.”
Future plans include transforming the Annex into a men’s antique destination, opening another store on the property, and possibly adding an ice cream shop and small bakery. The market also intends to continue hosting events to appeal to both longtime antique lovers and new customers.
With more than 50 dealers, the Salem Antique Market offers a wide variety of curated items. The Waldrons work closely with each vendor to maintain high standards for quality and selection. They also offer consignment opportunities for local sellers looking to reach a wider audience without managing the sales process themselves.
“We want Salem Antique Market to be a gathering place, a destination that attracts both locals and tourists,” Waldron said. “Whether people are looking for rare collectibles, browsing for a unique gift, or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, we aim to be a place that people want to return to again and again.”
