The Salem and Glenvar High School football and volleyball teams will have scrimmages this week as the fall season fast approaches. Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle Schools also have events scheduled.

The Salem High football team will be at Fork Union Military Academy Friday for an 11 am scrimmage against Maury High School. It will be a huge test for the young Spartans right out of the gate as the Commodores have been Class 5 state champions for the past two years, finishing with undefeated 15-0 records in both the 2023 and ’24 seasons.

Salem will not have a home scrimmage, as they’ll head to Amherst next Thursday, August 21, for a 7 pm varsity benefit game. That will follow a 5:30 pm jayvee scrimmage. The Spartans open on Friday, August 29, at home with E.C. Glass.

Glenvar will be in Vinton this Friday evening for their annual football scrimmage with William Byrd. It’s scheduled to start at 5 pm. The Highlanders will host Blacksburg for a home benefit game on August 22nd, then open at home against Galax on Friday, August 29.

Andrew Lewis Middle School will host a football jamboree today at 5 pm at Salem Stadium. Patrick Henry, William Fleming and Franklin County teams will join the Wolverines for scrimmages. Lewis opens next Thursday, August 21, at home against Cave Spring. The Wolverines will have seventh and eighth grade teams once again.

Glenvar Middle School football opens today with a home game against Northside Middle at 6:30 pm. Glenvar was in the Read Mountain jamboree last Saturday.

In volleyball, Salem High was scheduled to scrimmage at Franklin County on Wednesday of this week and at Jefferson Forest next Tuesday. The Spartans will open at home against Roanoke Catholic on Tuesday, August 26.

Glenvar has two scrimmages next week. The Highlanders will host Liberty High on Tuesday, August 19, and travel to Eastern Montgomery a week from today. Glenvar will open on Monday, August 26, at home against Craig County.

Middle School volleyball opens this week. Lewis was home to Pulaski on Tuesday and will host Cave Spring today at 5:30 pm. The Wolverines will be in the William Byrd jamboree in Vinton Saturday.

Glenvar Middle will open Monday, August 25, with a 4:30 pm volleyball match against Craig County Middle School.
