International Lizard Day, also known as World Lizard Day, is celebrated annually on Aug. 14. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about lizards, their diversity, ecological roles, and the importance of their conservation. It’s a chance to learn about these fascinating reptiles, their unique adaptations, and the threats they face. Virginia has nine native lizard species, including the common five-lined skink, eastern fence lizard, and several species of glass lizards (which are legless). The pig at the corner of W. Main Street and Bruffey Street in Salem was recently painted by the Winterer family of Salem. PHOTO BY BRIAN HOFFMAN
