Salem Golfers Are 3rd at Hunting Hills CC

The River Ridge District golf tour visited the Hunting Hills Country Club on Monday and Salem came out third on a beautiful day for golf. Blacksburg scorched the course with a season’s best 285 to win the round followed by Cave Spring at 308, Salem at 311 and then a group of four separated by just 10 strokes.

Blacksburg was boosted by a 1-2 finish from junior Jack Skinner, who posted an impressive six-under-par 64, and senior Cameron Sharp, who shot even par 70. Salem was led by two ladies as junior Ashnoor Kaur posted a 71 to finish third individually and freshman McKenzie Eversole came in at a career best 73.

“Ashnoor hit 15 greens in regulation and grabbed four birdies on the day,” said Salem coach Blaine Hancock. “She has been playing steady golf all season.”

“McKenzie got her first career eagle, a near hole out for albatross that led to a tap in eagle, and grabbed two other birdies on the day. McKenzie has really been working to elevate her game this season. She’s starting to see her hard work pay off in a big way.”

Also scoring for Salem was sophomore Mike Bateman with an 82 and Croix Bowen with an 85. Also playing for the Spartans were sophomore Eli Wells, who posted an 86, and senior Zach Bocock who shot 94.

“Another solid effort from our group,” said Hancock. “The ladies brought it today. We’ve been averaging around that 310 number this season. We’ve had a good season, but with two varsity tournaments to go, I know they are ready to score even lower heading toward the postseason.”

Next week is the final two regular season tournaments of the year. Salem travels to Olde Mill for the Carroll County Invitational on Monday before wrapping up the River Ridge District season Tuesday at the Blacksburg Country Club.

Glenvar did not have a match in the past week. The Highlanders will prepare for the post-season by hosting James River next Monday at Hanging Rock. The Sub-Regional will be September 29 at Great Oaks in Floyd.
