The Glenvar girls ran their winning streak to five games with a three set volleyball victory over Floyd County at GHS Tuesday night, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-11. Glenvar is now 12-2 overall and 5-1 in Three Rivers District matches after one trip through the district.
On Monday the Highlanders avenged one of their two losses when they defeated Auburn in a non-district match. This was a quality win against an opponent who had beaten the Highlanders in three sets in the Glenvar gym the first week of September.
“I’m proud of the girls for their effort and fight on a Monday night road match against a very tough opponent, and also pleased with the turnaround from the last time we played them,” said Glenvar coach Mark Rohrback.
The Highlanders won all three of their sets by two points. They opened with a 26-24 win before Auburn tied the match with a 25-18 win in the second. Glenvar then won the next two, 26-24 and 25-23. Auburn outscored Glenvar for the match, 96-95, but Glenvar scored when it counted most.
Sophia Hammersley had 12 kills to lead the Highlanders. Emily Rohrback had 24 assists and 17 digs, Macy McMahon had 18 digs and Zella Hayes had nine kills and two blocks.
Last Thursday at Cave Spring the Highlanders beat the host Knights in three, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22. Hammersley had 11 kills, 12 digs and 14 assists while Hayes had nine kills. Emily Rohrback had 24 assists.
“We played inconsistently but survived a very tough three match week,” said coach Rohrback. “I was proud of the girls for their effort and resilience.”
Glenvar is at Martinsville tonight to begin the second half of the district regular season. Next week they have a home match with Carroll County on Tuesday and a trip to James River a week from tonight.
