The Salem and Glenvar cross country teams are doing nine holes this week. The Spartans are hosting the annual races around the Salem Golf Course on Academy Street on Wednesday afternoon after school.
The golf course makes a great cross country course as well, and folks who play there know it’s also good for dog walking. The grass is trimmed nice and there’s some hills to navigate. It’s a great warmup for the coming cross country post-season.
Salem and Glenvar both ran in events last week as well. The Highlanders ran in the annual East Mont Invitational at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville while the Spartans ran in the East Coast Elite Fast Times meet at Green Hill Park Saturday. That’s a huge event and a preview for schools running in the Class 1,2 and 3 state championships.
Salem’s girls placed 12th out of 19 teams at the meet at Green Hill. Scoring for Salem and having season’s best times were Keeley Prosser, Caroline Huff, Olivia Huff, Hannah Patel, Madesyn Grubb and Chloe Underwood.
In the boys’ race Salem was seventh among 23 teams. Ten Spartans had season best times including Austin Prosser, John Stovall, Isaac Snow, Grafton Smith, Matt Palleria, Rick Rawlins, Bryce Crew, Luke Rawlins, Preston Espinet and Elijah Nielson. Also scoring for Salem were Grant Horner, Thomas Scharp and Jack Dixon.
Last week at Camp Alta Mons the Glenvar boys were second to host Eastern Montgomery. The Mustangs put the first three runners across the line while Glenvar had three in the top 10 with Aldin Smith fifth, Tyler Davis eighth and Zach Davis 10th. Also scoring were Evan Harris in 11th place and Asher Faught in 18th.
Patrick Henry won the girls’ team title and the Highlanders were sixth, led by Anna Hall in 13th place. Everly Shanks was 20th, Rayya Bryson was 22nd, Genna Shanks was 46th and Annaleigh was the last GHS scorer in 73rd place.
Jaxson Kuzmich of Glenvar won the middle school race by over 36 seconds. Sawyer Austin was 10th and Hudson Brendal was 11th. Middle Schoolers were also scheduled to run at the Salem Golf Course Wednesday.
