Layman Distributing has appointed W. Scott Thomasson as its new president, the company announced Sept. 22.
Thomasson is the fourth generation to lead the family-owned business, following founder W.D. Layman; Juanita L. Neely, who expanded the company’s products and territory in the 1960s; and Judy N. Ross, who oversaw major growth milestones including the acquisition of Reidsville Grocery and the company’s move to a new warehouse in 2023.
Thomasson has worked in nearly every department during his 20-year tenure with the company, gaining experience in warehouse operations, delivery, sales and purchasing. He also holds an MBA from Wake Forest University and has worked with Altria, Union Pacific Railroad and Overnite Transportation.
“I am honored to serve as the next president of Layman Distributing,” Thomasson said in a statement. “Our best days are ahead, and I am committed to building on our family’s proud legacy by growing our business, serving our customers, and supporting the success of every member of our team.”
Founded in 1948 as Layman Candy Company, the Salem-based distributor serves customers across Virginia and neighboring communities. Company officials said Thomasson will focus on continued growth while maintaining Layman’s long-standing emphasis on family values and customer service.
