Salem High freshman golfer McKenzie Eversole is moving on as the top qualifier out of the Virginia High School League Zone 6 girls’ qualifier. She had the best score among eight girls from eight different schools at the Roanoke Country Club Monday.
“It was a chilly and brutally windy day,” said Salem coach Blaine Hancock. “The wind was so strong that it blew multiple balls off the green throughout the day. The wind even sent a few push carts flying while the leaves and pine straw were blowing everywhere.”
Only two spots were available to advance to the VHSL Girls State Open. Scores were much higher than girls were used to seeing and the two girls advancing were Salem’s Eversole with an 86 and Isabella Geng of Blacksburg who posted an 89. Both girls are freshmen.
“McKenzie showed great resilience to post a solid round in difficult conditions,” said Hancock. “She kept her head and kept grinding to post the best round of the day. I’m proud of McKenzie and I know she’s got even bigger things to come ahead of her.”
Eversole advances to the girls’ state championship at the Heritage Oaks course in Harrisonburg next Monday, October 27.
