INTERSTATE 81
Exit 156, Botetourt County — Bridge work is underway on northbound and southbound I-81. Milling and paving will begin northbound, then move southbound. Nighttime lane closures are expected, along with slow roll operations and flagging on Route 640 (Brughs Mill Road). Completion: fall 2026.

Mile markers 94 & 105, Pulaski & Montgomery counties — Acceleration ramp extensions are under construction. The southbound entrance ramp at mile marker 94 is open. The northbound entrance ramp at mile marker 105 is closed until Oct. 30, with detour via Rock Road to Tyler Avenue. Nighttime lane closures run 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Completion: summer 2026.

Exit 89, Pulaski County — Bridge rehabilitation work continues. The Exit 89B on- and off-ramps to Draper Valley Road are closed with detours via Exit 94. Ramp and lane closures possible in both directions.

Exits 137–141, Roanoke County/Salem — A $179 million project is widening I-81 from two to three lanes in each direction over five miles. Expect nighttime lane closures, ramp restrictions at Exit 140, traffic shifts at Exit 137, uneven pavement and flagging on nearby roads. Work zone speed limit is 60 mph. Project includes six new bridges, 2.6 miles of sound barriers and interchange lighting. Completion: early 2026.

Mile markers 143–150 — Widening project in preparation phase. Nighttime lane and shoulder closures are underway, with barrier wall installation possible later this year. Completion: summer 2031.

Mile marker 95.7, Pulaski County — Deck overlay work on bridges over Peak Creek requires alternating nighttime lane closures, Sunday night through Friday morning. Completion: fall 2025.

Exit 105, Montgomery County — Northbound traffic has shifted onto the new New River bridge. Nighttime lane and shoulder closures possible, with periodic slow rolls between mile markers 98–109. Speed limit reduced to 60 mph. Completion ongoing.

General deck repairs — Weather permitting, bridge deck patching will close lanes between mile markers 89–170 at night. In Botetourt County, work is active between mile markers 160–164.

INTERSTATE 581
Roanoke — Paving and patching work continues with nighttime lane closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

ROANOKE CITY
Route 460 (Orange Avenue) — Shoulder and lane closures are in place for safety improvements from Burrell Street NW to Williamson Road NE, including I-581 off-ramp. New signal installation is underway. Delays possible.

ROANOKE COUNTY
Route 220/Route 419 interchange — Diverging diamond interchange project is in progress with work at multiple intersections. Completion: fall 2028.
Route 220 at Crossbow Circle/Pheasant Ridge Road — New traffic pattern in place; motorists must turn left or right and use U-turns instead of crossing. Paving operations begin week of Oct. 19.
Route 220 at Southern Hills Drive/Valley Avenue — New signalized traffic pattern in place. Nighttime lane closures ongoing.

BOTETOURT COUNTY
Route 621 (Roaring Run Road) — Reduced to one lane with temporary signal for culvert replacement near 618 Roaring Run Road. Delays possible. Completion: fall 2025.
Craig Botetourt Scenic Trail — Brush cutting and stabilization work continues on the former C&O railbed. Construction schedule not yet determined.

CRAIG COUNTY

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Route 460 Business — Pedestrian improvement project from Laurel Street to Spradlin Farm Drive includes daytime and nighttime lane closures. Completion: summer 2026.
Route 8 Park and Ride — Construction of a new park and ride lot near I-81 at mile marker 114 is underway. Lane closures and flagging operations possible on Route 8 and Route 666. Completion: winter 2027.
