Harry L. Stanley, affectionately known as H.L., went to his eternal home at the age of 91 on Monday, October 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, music, service, and unwavering love for his family and friends. A lifelong resident of Salem, Virginia, H.L. was a devoted member of New Life Presbyterian Church, where he worshipped faithfully and sang joyfully in the church choir for decades. His rich baritone voice also graced the harmonies of the Virginia Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus, bringing joy to many through music. H.L. proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and later dedicated 43 years of hard work and loyalty to John W. Hancock, Jr., Inc, a subsidiary of Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation, before retiring. His life was a testament to commitment—whether to his faith, his work, or the people he loved. He was also deeply involved in his community, serving for many years as a Parks and Recreation softball coach, where he mentored young athletes with patience and encouragement. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, H.L. found peace and joy fishing from the Cherry Grove Pier and at Barbours Creek. Above all, he was a devoted family man who rarely missed a sporting event or extracurricular activity of his grandchildren, cheering them on with pride and love. He was the beloved son of the late Harry L. Stanley and Callie M. Stanley, and the devoted husband of Judith T. Stanley, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He was also a loving brother to his late brother and sisters: Virginia Stump (Ed), Jeanine Mullins (Don), Mary Thompson (Jim), and Donald Stanley (Debbie). Together, he and Judy raised four children who carry forward his values and warmth: Sharon Hill (Tom), Susan Gardner (Mike), Sherill Steffan (Steve), and Scott Stanley (Christi).H.L. was a proud grandfather to Warren Gardner, Ashley Hawkins (Dylan), Matthew Hill (Paige), Kasey Rogers (Dustin), Regan McDaniel (Shawn), Cady Hill, Emily Steffan, Ryan Stanley, Scott Steffan, Mason Stanley, and Haley Steffan. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Hayden Rogers, Eden Hill, and Tatum Hill. He also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews: Mark Thompson (Traci), Donna Plebani (Ronnie), Buddy Dale Stump (Barb), and Chris Stanley (Stephanie), along with a host of extended family and dear friends who will miss his steady presence, strong faith, and generous heart. A Celebration of Life service will be held at New Life Presbyterian Church, Salem, officiated by Rev. Cameron Smith on Monday, October 27, 2025. Visitation is from 3 to 4 p.m. with the service following at 4 p.m. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Friendship, Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center, and Good Samaritan for their care and support.
