Salem High freshman McKenzie Eversole finished 25th in the Virginia High School League girls’ state golf championship Monday. The tournament, for qualifying girls from all VHSL classifications, was held at the Heritage Oaks Course in Harrisonburg.
Eversole shot an 86 on a cold and windy day. The start of the tournament was delayed by 30 minutes due to frost on the course.
“Everyone was bundled up to battle the elements,” said Salem High golf coach Blaine Hancock. “McKenzie hit the ball extremely well off the tee. She was able to rack up nine pars on the day and claim her spot as one of the top 25 girls in the state.”
Eversole was the only freshman in the tournament.
“To be only a freshman and playing at a high level to be one of the top 25 in the entire state is impressive,” said Hancock. “There were many more positives to take away from this experience. The future is bright for this young star.”
