The City of Salem will celebrate the holiday season with its annual Christmas Parade on Thursday, Dec. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. The festivities will kick off with the lighting of the Christmas tree in the Library Courtyard, followed by the parade.
The parade is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Salem in partnership with Salem Parks and Recreation. Funds raised through the event support scholarships for Glenvar and Salem High School graduates, as well as sponsorships for participating bands.
This year’s parade will feature more than eight bands, units from the Shriners, and a special appearance by Miss Virginia. Santa Claus will also join the celebration with assistance from the Salem Fire and EMS Department.
Registration for parade participants is still open, with a deadline of Nov. 11. For more information, visit the Kiwanis Club of Salem Christmas Parade registration page.
Organizers note there will be no television coverage of the parade this year.
