The Salem High girls’ basketball team was one win away from a state championship in March. On Tuesday night they opened this season like they’re determined to go one step farther, dominating William Byrd in a 70-30 win at Salem High.
The Spartans put 18 points on the board before Byrd scored. Salem’s swarming defense caused numerous turnovers and easy buckets at the other end, and the Salem girls shot the ball well off their half-court offense.
By halftime the Spartans led 45-10. Coach Scott Jester let his starters open the second half but they never got off the bench for the fourth quarter as Salem cruised to the win.
Emme Custer led the Spartans in scoring with 17. Kourtney Goens had nine points in the first quarter and finished with 13 and Gabby Crawley had 10 points, all in the first half.
The girls are back on the floor tonight with a 6 pm varsity game at Northside. The Vikings opened with a 36-32 win over Hidden Valley on Tuesday.
Next Monday, December 8, the girls are at Franklin County.
