Mandy Thompson, a licensed practical nurse in the Community Living Center at the Salem VA Medical Center, has been recognized with a DAISY Award for the compassionate care she provided to a veteran and the veteran’s family during end-of-life care.

Thompson was honored for demonstrating respect, comfort and unwavering commitment while supporting the veteran and family through an emotionally difficult time. According to the award nomination, Thompson formed a strong bond of trust by taking time to learn the veteran’s needs and story of military service.

Colleagues and family members noted that Thompson communicated openly and sincerely, providing regular updates and offering heartfelt support throughout the veteran’s final days. Her approach emphasized dignity, respect and recognition of the veteran’s sacrifice to the nation.

A sibling of the veteran praised Thompson’s dedication in the nomination, writing that her goal “has always been to provide cheer, smiles, comfort and caring.”

“Mandy goes way beyond providing adequate and professional care,” the sibling wrote. “She demonstrates sweet kindness and love and has throughout the years. She truly shows love to every patient and family member.”

The DAISY Award recognizes nurses for extraordinary compassion and clinical excellence. Thompson was commended for consistently bringing a positive attitude, warmth and a bright smile to her work, qualities that left a lasting impression on the veteran’s family.

Salem VA officials encouraged the community to join in recognizing Thompson for her devotion to serving veterans, their caregivers and families, noting that her compassion continues to inspire those in her care.
