
The Gator Center in Roanoke was the site of the All-Timesland swim meet last Saturday, and Salem and Glenvar both had swimmers in the meet. The annual meet includes most of the area teams and is one of the biggest in the regular season, and the Salem boys finished in first place.
The Spartans’ 200 medley relay team of Starke Griffith, Riley Handy, Jack Lawrence and Carter Biscotte finished in first place, as did the 200 free relay of Griffith, Zach Bocock, Mike Bateman, and Biscotte. The free relay swam a state cut with a time of 1:32.82.
Individually, Biscotte won both the 50 free and the 100 butterfly while Lawrence took a third in the 100 fly and a fifth in the 400 free. Handy was third in the 200 IM and in the 50 free Bocock was fourth and Griffith took sixth. Handy also took a third in the 100 breast while in the 100 backstroke Bateman was fifth and Garrison James took sixth. The boys’ 400 free relay of Bateman, Bocock, Handy and Jack Lawrence was third.
The Salem girls finished seventh as a team. The 200 free relay of Layla Vaught, Gracie Michael, Riley Miller and Aubrey Snead was fourth and the 200 medley relay foursome of Miller, Keeley Prosser, Vaught and Snead was sixth. Miller also took a fourth in the 100 back and Snead took a fifth in the 500 free.
The Glenvar boys’ took third place at the Gator Center Saturday despite being the smallest school competing. The Highlanders opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, improving their preliminary time to post a 1:49.62 in the finals. The relay team of Avery Thompson, Landon Cairns, Aspen Thompson, and Brendan Miller set the tone for a competitive day.
Individually, sophomore Aspen Thompson led Glenvar with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Landon Cairns delivered one of the meet’s signature moments by finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle, setting a new Glenvar High School record, and followed it with a second-place finish in an exciting 100-yard breaststroke race.
The meet concluded with a strong showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Avery Thompson, Nikita Larin, Aspen Thompson, and Landon Cairns dropped nine seconds from their preliminary time placing second in the finals.
