The Salem High girls improved to 15-1 on the season with two more decisive wins last week. The Spartans ran their winning streak to eight straight with a non-district win over Franklin County and a home rout of Pulaski, holding both teams under 20 points.

Last Wednesday in Rocky Mount Salem took a 62-17 win over the Eagles. Emme Custer had 18 points and six rebounds, Bailey Rider had a dozen points and five boards and Gabby Crawley had 10 points and seven rebounds.

“We did an excellent job sharing the ball, 17 assists on 22 made field goals,” said Salem coach Scott Jester.

On Friday the Spartans jumped all over Pulaski, racing out to a 22-4 lead in the first quarter. The Cougars never recovered from the early knockout as Salem raced to a 60 point win, 74-14.

“Probably our best game of the year so far against a solid Pulaski team,” said Jester. “Our defense was sound and we didn’t give them many clean looks. Proud of our effort.”

Rider had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Salem. Kourtney Goins had a dozen points and half a dozen boards and Crawley had 10 and seven. Salem shot 82 percent from the line, an outstanding number for a high school girls’ team.

The Spartans were back on the court Wednesday for a game against Lord Botetourt in Daleville but results were too late for publication. Friday they host Cave Spring and next Tuesday, January 27, the Spartans are in Blacksburg.
