The River Ridge District basketball tournament has been cancelled but the Salem High team is battling for position in Region 4D. The Spartans are currently in second place in the region for the tournament, which begins January 20th with a four-five game.
The Spartans are 17-3 overall after defeating Pulaski County at Salem High Tuesday, 67-41. That puts them in second in the region behind E.C. Glass. If they can hold that spot they’ll get a home game on February 23rd for the Region 4D South semifinal.
The River Ridge District tournament, scheduled for this week, has been cancelled so schools can get their regular season games in after the many postponements due to the January winter storm. Salem had a game with Blacksburg postponed several times, but the Spartans finally got it in Monday and took a 92-51 win over the Bruins at Salem High.
Jack Stroud had a career high 24 points in this one to lead the Spartans, sinking four three-pointers. Salem had five players in double figures as Jaydius Hamm had 15 points, Cam Boles had a dozen, Oliver Gilliam had 11 and Elijah Paddyfote had 10 points. Salem had a 47-32 lead at the half, then outscored the Bruins 45-19 after intermission.
The Spartans are now off until next Tuesday when they play host to Hidden Valley, one of two teams that has beaten them this season. The regular season finale is a week from tonight, on February 19, at Christiansburg.
