Ken Nicely, superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools, recently contributed to a new book highlighting innovative approaches to STEM education in school systems across the country.

The book, STEM Century: It Takes a Village to Raise a 21st-Century Graduate, was released through a collaboration between AASA, The School Superintendents Association and 21stCenturyEd. It features chapters from district leaders describing how intentionally designed STEM programs help students develop skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving while preparing them for future careers.

Nicely helped write Chapter 4, which highlights Roanoke County’s Opportunity Ready Graduate initiative and the work of local students, teachers and staff.

“I am so proud of the Opportunity Ready Graduate work done by our students, teachers, principals and staff in RCPS and am glad we have the chance to tell their story in Chapter 4 of this new book launched today,” Nicely said.

According to the publisher’s description, the book aims to inspire school leaders nationwide by sharing real-world examples of STEM education that make learning relevant, rigorous and connected to life beyond the classroom.

The book can be found on Amazon.
