Middle School sports opened for the Andrew Lewis and Glenvar teams last week with a full schedule for both.
In baseball Lewis had three games through Monday. The Wolverines opened their season with a 9-4 win over Ben Franklin as Jaheim France went three-for-three at the plate. France singled in the first inning, doubled in the third, and doubled again in the fifth. Landon Bell earned the win for the Wolverines. Bell allowed six hits and just one earned run over six innings, striking out five and walking one.
On Thursday at Kiwanis Park Lewis fell to visiting Read Mountain, 7-2. Tyler Coe and Jaheim France collected two hits for Andrew Lewis.
On Monday in Vinton Nicholas Winterer had a three-run homer and drove in four runs but Lewis fell to host William Byrd, 17-7.
Glenvar had an unusual opener with Cave Spring last Thursday at Starkey Park in south Roanoke County.
“We had a little controversy with the score,” said Glenvar coach Kirby Hamilton. “Cave had it 6-5, our book had 5-5. Since Cave was home we had to go by their book.”
The Highlanders were led in hitting by Luke Tozier and Camden Hamilton, both with two hits. Nic Mushall led the team pitching, going two innings and giving up one earned run while fanning three.
In softball the Glenvar girls got off to a good start with a 5-1 win over Cave Spring at home. Sawyer Martin pitched a complete game, only giving up one hit while striking out five and walking two. Corra Hayes was three-for-three at the plate with two triples and an inside the park home run in the first inning.
Lewis has a new softball coach in Nick Sharp, who is a former head coach at Cave Spring High School. The girls have played three games and lost 10-0 to Franklin County, 8-4 to Read Mountain and 4-0 to William Byrd Monday at the Moyer Complex. Byrd broke up a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the sixth.
“This year has been challenging so far with such a young and inexperienced team, but they continue to work and learn each day and try to improve their skills,” said Sharp. “We have strong pitching which is helping us in these early games.”
Thad Snyder is the new coach of the Lewis boys’ soccer team. The Wolverines tied their opener with Ben Franklin, 2-2, with Gavin Hancock scoring both goals. Last Thursday Marcos Herrera had a goal in a 2-1 loss to Read Mountain but Lewis bounced back Monday for a 2-0 win over William Byrd in Vinton. Hancock and Herrera had one goal each.
The Glenvar boys battled through the cold and rain to beat Northside, 7-0, in their opener. Two goals were scored by Kiptyn Jones and additional goals were scored by Anderson Feliciano, Kellen Booze, Bryson Kuzmich, James Schruth and Jaxson Kuzmich. The goal keeping tandem of Hudson Brendel and Aiden Driver along with the defense got their first shutout of the season.
Glenvar made it 2-0 with a 3-0 win over Cave Spring Thursday. Goals were scored by Bryson Kuzmich, Jones and Jaxson Kuzmich.
The Lewis girls defeated Ben Franklin, 4-1, in their opener. Mallory Franklin had two goals for the Wolverines.
Last Thursday Lewis downed Read Mountain, 2-0. The first goal came in the first half by Lilian Richerson unassisted. In the second half, Franklin scored a half volley from a corner kick assisted by Richerson.
On Monday at home Lewis shut out William Byrd, 8-0. Naziyah Belcher led the team with three goals and an assist.
Glenvar’s girls lost their opener to Cave Spring, 1-0, with the only goal coming on a corner kick. Ryleigh Conner had seven saves to keep the Highlanders in the game.
Lewis and Glenvar teams were scheduled to play each other on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. Lewis took on Hidden Valley teams Wednesday and today Glenvar goes against Ben Franklin with the softball and girls’ soccer teams at home and the baseball and boys’ soccer teams in Rocky Mount.
