The Glenvar soccer teams both had scheduled seasons openers last week but neither the girls nor boys picked up a win or a loss. The girls had both of their games rained out and the boys opened with a tie.

The Glenvar boys’ began their quest for a fourth straight Class 2 state championship with a home game against Magna Vista last Wednesday. The Warriors are an always formidable Class 3 team and they were a good match for the Highlanders to open the season.

As expected, this game was tight to the end. Neither team was able to score through regulation but Glenvar broke the ice in the first overtime as Ryder Francisco assisted Adam Saunders. However, the Warriors answered just 90 seconds later and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Glenvar outshot the visitors, 14-9, and Tyler Shannon had six saves for the Highlanders.

“We left a lot of chances on the table as we earned 13 corner kicks and didn’t convert on any of them,” said Glenvar coach Josh Jones. “There is a lot to learn from this game that will hopefully be helpful as we move forward.”

Both teams are off this week for spring break, returning Wednesday, April 1, for a girls-boys doubleheader against Auburn at Highlander Stadium. The girls will kick off at 5:30 pm with the boys to follow.
