Roanoke College recently received a $274,000 federal award to expand access to its Explore@RC dual enrollment lab school program for high school students across the region.

The funding, awarded through the U.S. Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, will support the growth of Explore@RC, which allows students in grades 10 through 12 to enroll in college-level courses and earn college credits.

Students can earn up to 12 credits through career pathways aligned with workforce needs, including STEM and healthcare, education and global studies, and communications and civic engagement. The program also offers mentoring, job shadowing and hands-on field experiences.

College officials said the federal funding will provide several resources aimed at expanding student access and participation. Planned initiatives include a laptop lending program for students who lack reliable technology, the addition of an enrollment liaison to assist families and schools with scheduling and admissions, and the hiring of a curriculum specialist to develop new education pathways tied to regional workforce needs.

Funding will also support the purchase of a passenger van to transport students to community partners for workplace learning opportunities.

“It’s exciting to see what’s possible when so many partners come together to support student success,” said Lisa Stoneman, assistant vice president at Roanoke College and head of the regional partnership initiative RC-RV. “Together, we’re creating real opportunities and ensuring more young people have a clear path to higher education and meaningful careers.”

Explore@RC is currently accepting applications for the fall 2026 semester. Families interested in learning more about the program can attend an upcoming open house to meet program leaders, tour student spaces and learn about opportunities available through the program.
