The Salem High softball team returned from spring break against a strong William Byrd team Tuesday and came out on the short end of the score. The Terriers beat Salem 9-1 at the Moyer Complex.
Byrd jumped on the Spartans for three first inning runs. Salem cut the lead to 3-1 after three innings but the Terrier bats were smoking and the Spartans made some untimely miscues. Olivia Crosswhite pitched five innings for Salem and allowed only one earned run.
Salem had just two hits off Byrd starter Hadyn Grubb. Kayden Dalton and Yayda Young had one hit each and Young scored Salem’s run.
The Spartans are now 2-2 and will be back in action today at Cave Spring.
