Glenvar’s Jack Osburn slides safely into third in Monday’s win over Hidden Valley

The Glenvar baseball team split two games against Roanoke County rivals this week on back-to-back days. Glenvar beat Hidden Valley on Monday, 9-7, but lost to Northside on Tuesday, 7-0, both at home.

The Highlanders built a 9-1 lead against Hidden Valley Monday but had to hang on for the win. Cam Feazell picked up a save when he came on to get the final out in the top of the seventh with the potential tying runs on base.

Cale Vaughan started on the mound and got the win, pitching five and two-thirds innings. He allowed three earned runs and fanned five before Gray Hutchison relived and pitched one complete inning.

“They kept chipping away but we were able to hold on and get the win,” said Glenvar coach Jeremy Cromer.

Jack Osburn and Jake Franklin had two hits each for Glenvar. Osburn also drove in four runs and Franklin knocked in two.

On Tuesday a strong Northside team shut out the Highlanders on six hits. Osburn had two and four others had one each. Feazell started and pitched four innings, striking out five. Freshman John Deel pitched the final three innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run.

“It was closer than the score looks,” said Cromer. “A hit here or there and it’s not a 7-0 ballgame.”

Glenvar is now 1-2 after playing Class 4 Salem and two strong Class 3 teams, Hidden Valley and Northside.

“We play a tough schedule, but I wouldn’t change it,” said Cromer. “Playing these teams gets us ready for the playoffs. We wouldn’t see pitching like this if we played weaker teams.”

The Highlanders are now off until next Tuesday when they open Three Rivers District play at Carroll County.
