The Salem High baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with two wins in the past week. The Spartans won 8-3 at Hidden Valley in a River Ridge District game last Friday and 7-3 in a non-district game against William Byrd at Billy Sample Field Monday.

The Salem offense had a dozen hits in the win over Hidden Valley. Salem jumped to a 4-0 lead and never trailed as Aiden Poff, Zach Bocock, Ben Farber and Jack Stroud all had two hits. Stroud picked up the win on the mound, his second of the season.

“Jack mixed three pitches well to get the Titan hitters swinging early,” said Salem coach Jimmy Winterer.

Stroud threw five shutout innings and pitched into the seventh before hitting his pitch limit. Mason Brown came on to get the last out on a stellar play by secondbaseman Chase Rutledge.

On Monday the Spartans hosted William Byrd, a team they had lost to a week prior. Bocock took the mound and was impressive, fanning 11 with a 90-plus mph fastball to earn his second win over the season. He allowed just one run on two hits and has now struck out 39 batters in 23 innings. Brown came out of the bullpen to finish up after Zach reached his pitch limit.

Offensively, Brown was two-for-three with a stolen base. Farber also had two hits and Rutledge had a double and swiped a base.

Now back on the winning side at 5-4, the Spartans will host Patrick Henry Friday night at 5:30 pm.
