Prior to Glenvar High’s baseball game on Friday against Floyd County the Highlander baseball diamond will be named in honor of former coach Larry Wood. The Larry Wood Field Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for 5 pm with the game against Floyd to follow at 5:15 pm.
“I expect a huge turnout,” said current Glenvar coach Jeremy Cromer, who played for Wood in high school. “This is way overdue and I’m glad it’s finally happening. I hope a lot of his former players come out Friday for this event.”
Wood was the baseball coach at Glenvar for over 20 years, leading the Highlanders to the Group A state championship in 1994 after finishing as state runner-up in 1993. He was named state Coach of the Year in ’94. From 1990 to 1999 Wood’s Highlanders won 150 games and lost just 51.
A graduate of E.C. Glass High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete, Wood has been involved in coaching for over 50 years and has also served as head baseball coach at Roanoke College. He’s currently an assistant coach with the Glenvar High girls’ softball team. The girls will also play Floyd at home on Friday and they’ll start 15 minutes later than usual so the girls can watch the field dedication.
