Empowering individuals to build a stronger community
Benita VanCleave

The Salem Public Library is conducting an interest survey for adults who are solo agers. Library staff are exploring the idea of forming a Solo Aging Group(s) at the library as a welcoming community for connection, learning, and shared support. We want to hear from you! The link to the survey is available on the Salem Public Library’s webpage, www.salemlibrary.info or you pick up a paper copy at the library.

Solo aging, a rising trend among senior adults, is addressed in the April 2026 issue of the Salem Public Library’s The Resilient Library Newsletter. Declining marriage rates and fewer children have significantly increased the number of solo agers compared to previous generations. About 28% of adults aged 65 and older –roughly 22 million people –live alone. This issue highlights The Solo-Agers Decision Guide resource series provided by a partnership between SOA (Society of Actuaries) Research Institute and Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER).

The Resilient Library Newsletter is a free monthly newsletter produced by the Salem Public Library for adults interested in optimal aging topics and resources. Get this newsletter in your inbox! Email us at: library@salemva.gov The current issue is also available on our library website, or you can pick up a copy while you are in the library.
