The Glenvar girls wanted to do it for Larry Wood, and they almost did. The Highlanders led for most of the game before their upset bid against Floyd County fell short last Friday, 8-7.
The Highlanders were 2-11 as they host ed 8-1 Floyd follow ing the baseball field being named for Larry Wood, who is now an assistant coach with the softball team. The girls’ game began 15 min utes later than usual so the Highlanders could enjoy the naming cer emony, and once they walked back up the hill to the softball field they were determined, put ting up five runs in the first inning to shock the Buffaloes.
It began when Audrey Moles singled up the middle, followed by a walk to Paisley Hodge. Zella Hayes then doubled, scoring Moles and Hodge, and Chloe Maxey singled in Hayes. Maxey and Hayden Hartz, who walked, also scored in the inning as the Highlanders went up 5-0.
Glenvar’s bats then cooled off and Floyd slowly started chipping away at the lead. The Highlanders still led 5-3 after six frames but in the top of the sev enth Floyd rallied for five runs, including a three-run homer. The Highlanders fought back with two in the bottom of the inning on a Hayes two-run homer. Haley Leginus and Maxey sin gled to put the potential winning runs on base but the Buffalo gals were able to hold on for the 8-7 win. Jaycee Nunley went the distance in the circle, allowing 12 hits and walking two.
On Monday night the Highlanders hosted Hidden Valley and it wasn’t as close, as the Titans took a 15-3 lead to drop Glenvar to 2-12 overall. The Highlanders shot themselves in the foot with nine errors.
Glenvar will be look ing for their second dis trict win today at 6 pm when the girls play host to Carroll County for Senior Night.
