The Glenvar High tennis teams are playing in the Region 2C tournaments this week at Virginia Tech.
The Glenvar girls got off to a good start with a 5-0 win over Nelson County in the opening round of team play Tuesday. Riley Price, Shawna Garwood, Rebecca Magruder, Karis Gillespie and Priya Patel all won their singles matches to clinch the win before the final singles and all three doubles matches were concluded.
The girls advanced to a Wednesday match against James River, who upset top-seeded Appomattox on Tuesday, 5-4. Radford and Floyd were scheduled to play in the other semifinal and the winners will meet Thursday in the championship match.
Doubles competition was slated to start Wednesday afternoon with Shawna Garwood and Rebecca Magruder taking the court for the Highlanders. Singles competition begins Thursday with Riley Price on the court for Glenvar.
The girls defeated Carroll County at home last week, 5-2, to finish the regular season at 10-6.
“Our girls are playing really well, they seem to be peaking at the right time,” said coach Shannon Hall. “The early season conditioning and hard work is paying dividends as we enter the post season.”
The boys wrapped up the regular season with a 6-3 win over Patrick County last week. That locked up the third seed in the region tournament for the Highlanders and they won their opening region match against Bland County Tuesday, 5-4. Glenvar and Floyd were scheduled to play next.
Christian Hill will compete in the singles tournament for Glenvar and Christian and Chaitanya Gohil will compete in the doubles division.
