The Salem RidgeYaks are on the road this week for a six game series with the Wilson Warbirds. The ‘birds are a farm team of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Salem completed a six games series with Hickory last Sunday, defeating the Crawdads 1-0 as three pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout. Jacob Mayers started and pitched three innings without allowing a hit. Cole Tolbert was next and he went four and two thirds to get the win, allowing two hits. Wuilliams Rodriguez came on to pitch the last inning and a third for his second save of the season.
Salem’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Andrew Opata scored from second on a single by Andruw Musett. Opata had two of Salem’s six hits.
With the win the Yaks split the six game series. Salem had lost three in a row before taking a 5-1 win Saturday followed by the Sunday shutout.
Prior to last week’s homestand the parent Boston Red Sox promoted outfielder Enddy Azocar and catcher Luke Heyman to the High-A Greenville Drive. Coming back to Salem from the Drive were pitcher Joey Gartrell, catcher Adonys Guzman and pitcher Calvin Bickerstaff along with shortstop Louis Andujar, who was called up to Salem from the Sox Florida Coast League team. Bickerstaff was sent back to Greenville this week.
Following last week’s split Salem had a 23-28 record and was 14 games behind first place Fredericksburg in the Carolina League North Division standings. The Yaks will be back home on Tuesday, June 9, to open a five game series with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, a farm team of the Houston Astros.
