Glenvar tennis players are still alive with the post-season nearing an end. The Glenvar girls’ team will play at Ridgeview on Friday in the state quarterfinals after finishing as region runners-up and the boys’ doubles team will play a state semifinal match on June 12th at Liberty University.
The girls defeated James River, 5-3, in the region 2C semifinal last Wednesday at Virginia Tech. Rebecca Magruder, Karis Gillespie and Rayah Kelley won singles victories. Magruder and Shawna Garwood, along with Gillespie and Cay Jones, had doubles wins to clinch the match and earn the Highlanders a state berth.
Glenvar lost to Radford in the region final on Thursday, 5-1, with Magruder the lone winner. Following the team championship Magruder and Garwood defeated the James River duo, 7-5, 6-0, in a region doubles quarter final. The pair lost in the semifinal to a tough Floyd County team.
“This senior led group of girls just won’t give up,” said coach Shannon Hall. “To say I’m proud of their effort is an understatement.”
The boys’ doubles team that will play at Liberty University consists of senior Christian Hill and sophomore Chaitanya Gohil. The Glenvar team was knocked out of the region tournament by a strong Floyd County team after Glenvar beat Bland, 5-3, in their region opener.
