Glenvar soccer girls warm up during last week’s Region 2C tournament.

The Glenvar girls punched their ticket to the Class 2 state soccer Final Four with a win over Central High of Wise Tuesday. The girls won 2-0 in Norton to improve to 19-2 on the season.

Glenvar advances to Friday’s state semifinal on Friday morning at Salem High’s Spartan Field. The girls will play the 11 am game against Central High of Woodstock in the semifinal round.

The Highlanders earned a trip to the state tournament with a runner-up finish in the Region 2C tournament at the Smith River Complex in Axton last week. The big win was a 4-0 victory over Auburn on Wednesday that clinched a spot in the state tournament. Glenvar led 1-0 at the half and coach Kyleigh Phillips made some adjustments at halftime that paid off.

“We had to make a few adjustments but really started to click to finish it out,” said Phillips. “Our girls played hard to make sure they secured their spot in the state tournament.

Gabby Barba had two goals, Sawyer Wilson had a goal and an assist, Lillia Schwab had a goal and Chloe Childers had an assist.

Glenvar played Nelson County in Thursday’s championship game and dropped a 2-0 decision to a strong Governor’s team.

“It was a tough battle to a talented Nelson County team,” said Phillips. “We battled hard but could not find the back of the net.”
