Salem and Glenvar recreation softball teams are playing in the Roanoke Area Youth Softball Association(RAYSA) double-elimination tournaments at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem and Darrell Shell Park in Roanoke County this week. Action began on Sunday and RAYSA has tournaments for 10U, 13U and 17U teams.

In the 10U tournament Salem advanced to the winners’ bracket final for a Wednesday game against Botetourt at the Moyer Complex. Salem opened with a 12-2 win over South County, then beat North Roanoke, 12-4, to advance to the winners’ bracket final. Wednesday’s winner advances to the championship game Thursday at Darrell Shell Park and there’s an “if game” if needed.

Glenvar’s 10U team was still alive at press time after losing to Vinton in their opener, 7-3. Glenvar bounced back to shut out South County in the losers’ bracket, 8-0, and was scheduled to play late Tuesday in another elimination game.

In the 13U tournament Salem was also in the winners’ bracket final, which was scheduled for late Tuesday against South County. The Salemites opened with a 12-0 win over Vinton on Sunday, then edged Clifton Forge on Monday, 11-9. The 13U championship game is also at Darrell Shell Thursday.

Glenvar does not have a 13U team and neither Glenvar nor Salem has a team in the U17 tournament, which includes just Vinton, South County and Franklin County. The championship in that tournament was at the Moyer Complex Wednesday, too late for press deadlines.
