Salem officials are seeking public input as the city begins the process of assessing current housing conditions and future housing needs through a community survey that will support an application for a state planning grant.
The City of Salem is conducting a preliminary housing survey to gather information about housing conditions, affordability, neighborhood stability, rehabilitation needs and future housing demands throughout the city. Responses will help support the city’s application for a planning grant through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to conduct a comprehensive citywide housing study.
City officials said the survey is intended to provide a data-driven understanding of Salem’s housing market and identify challenges facing residents. The information collected will be used to guide future housing planning efforts and help ensure the city remains an attractive place to live.
The City of Salem hosted a public open house June 16 in Salem City Council Chambers as part of its effort to gather community input for a proposed housing study. Sessions were held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., allowing residents to learn more about the planning process and share feedback on housing-related issues facing the city.
The survey includes questions about residents’ housing situations, housing affordability, home maintenance challenges, neighborhood conditions and future housing priorities. Participants are also asked to identify barriers to finding housing in Salem and suggest areas where housing improvements should be prioritized.
According to the city, survey responses are anonymous and confidential and will be used only in summary form for planning purposes. Officials said broad community participation is essential to obtaining an accurate picture of Salem’s current housing conditions and future needs.
The survey is available online through the city’s housing assessment initiative: . Questions about the survey or housing assessment project may be directed to the City of Salem Community Development Department’s Planning and Zoning Division at 21 S. Bruffey St. or by calling 540-375-3036.
