Grand Master Eddie Thomas of Roanoke is a recipient of the prestigious 2026 G.O.A.T. Honors (Greatest of All Time) Martial Arts Award, recognizing his extraordinary lifetime of leadership, championship achievement, and service to the international martial arts community.
The G.O.A.T. Honors Awards, founded by Grand Master Lawrence Arthur, recognize exceptional martial artists from around the world whose lifelong commitment to excellence, leadership, instruction, and community service has made a lasting impact on generations of students and instructors. The 2026 awards ceremony was held on Saturday, July 25, in Lynchburg.
Grand Master Thomas began his martial arts journey in 1975, studying Shotokan Karate before expanding his training under legendary martial artists including Joe Lewis, Steve “Nasty” Anderson, Charlie Lee, and numerous East Coast masters in Filipino Martial Arts, Thai Boxing, and Nihon Goshin Aikido. Drawing from decades of competition, travel, and instruction, he developed the curriculum that became the foundation of American Freestyle Karate, one of Virginia’s most respected martial arts schools.
Over the course of more than four decades, Grand Master Thomas has won more than 500 karate trophies, including five World Championships, and has taught over 10,000 students. In addition to his accomplishments in martial arts, he is also an actor and independent film maker, having appeared in numerous films while producing the martial arts feature “Talos” and its sequel. His lifelong commitment to teaching, competition, and innovation has earned him widespread respect throughout the martial arts community.
