The Salem Dixie League AAA All-Stars, for nine and 10 year old boys, saw their run come to an end in the semifinal round of the state tournament at Patrick County-Southside Park in Martinsville last week.
After splitting their first two games Salem lost to Cumberland in the semis, 3-0, for their second loss in the double elimination tournament. Nick Winterer pitched five strong innings for Salem and Nate Keffer pitched a scoreless sixth. Cumberland went on to win the tournament by defeating Lunenburg in the final.
“Cumberland was a great team that won the tournament by dominating the competition, winning all other games by double digits,” said Salem coach Judd Cowling. “Our boys gave it everything they had, as they have all season, but came up short.”
