The Salem golfers aren’t playing bad, but they’re no Bruins. No one is in these parts.
On Tuesday at the Blacksburg Country Club the host team shot a team score of 284 to win a River Ridge District match. That’s four strokes under par for the team, an unheard of number.
“Their number six shot a 65,” said Salem coach Thad Snyder in disbelief. Par for the course is 72 at BCC.
Once again Salem finished second, but 49 strokes behind the Bruins at 333. Salem was well ahead of third place Patrick Henry, who had 351, followed by Pulaski County at 353 and Cave Spring at 354.
Individually, Garrison Conner led Salem with a 75. Brian Hutton shot 79 and also scoring were Johnny Danstrom at 89 and Daniel Poff at 90.
“We’re not playing great, but we’re not playing bad and we’re nowhere close to Blacksburg,” said Snyder. “We usually finish second or third in the district matches.”
Last week the Spartans played a non-district match at Hanging Rock against William Byrd and Northside. Salem easily won that that nine-hole match with a 165. Conner and Poff both shot 39, Hutton had a 42 and Makena Witt had 45.
Salem is back at the Rock today as it’s the Spartans turn to host. Tee off time is 1 pm for the River Ridge match.
Glenvar had a match at Hanging Rock on Tuesday but no scores were reported. The Highlanders are at Floyd Monday.
