Choral Evensong: On Sunday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m., a Service of Choral Evensong commemorating the Feast of All Saints will be offered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 42 E. Main Street in Salem. This centuries-old, reflective service includes readings from scripture, music and prayer. Evensong has its origin in the ancient monastic service of vespers. During the reign of Henry VIII, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer changed the service to Evensong for the Anglican Church.  Evensong is sung daily in cathedrals and parish churches throughout the world. The St. Paul’s choir, under the direction of Steven R. Lawrence, will sing settings of the Evening Canticles by Herbert Brewer, Psalm 150 by Charlies Villiers Stanford, and the anthem Give us the wings of faith by James Whitbourn. The choir will be joined by organist Margaret Johnson.  The Rev. J. Edward Morris, Rector of St. Paul’s will officiate the service. St. Paul’s, located in the heart of the City of Salem, is a welcoming parish, seeking to proclaim by word and example the good news of Jesus Christ. We warmly invite everyone to attend this service of Choral Evensong and hope that you will find it an opportunity for refreshment, renewal and joy. A reception follows the service in the Parish Hall. For more information, please visit salemstpauls.org or call the church office at (540) 389-9307.

Crowder and Zach Williams: Two of the biggest stars in Contemporary Christian Music are returning to Salem on Nov. 20. Crowder and Zach Williams are co-headlining a fall tour that also includes hitmaker Matt Maher. Williams is an Arkansas native who hit rock bottom on several fronts before producing an endless string of hits and striking a chord with millions of Christian music followers. From “Chain Breaker” to “There was Jesus” with Dolly Parton, to “Little Less Like Me”, Williams has created an incredible following with his poignant lyrics and soulful arrangements. Crowder grew up in Texas and was a student at Baylor University when he realized music might help get more students to attend church at the Christian college. So, he formed a band and started drawing a crowd. He has never stopped filling seats. Crowder has been a staple in Contemporary Christian Music since 1996 when he was the leader of the David Crowder Band. In 2012, he embarked on a solo career, and the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist has never looked back. Four of Crowder’s five solo albums have hit number one on the charts, with the other compilation of songs landing at number two. Tickets can be purchased at the Salem Civic Center Box Office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and online.
