Earth Day Program: Foraging for Edible Weeds: Historian Peggy Shifflett grew up in the Appalachian hamlet of Hopkins Gap, Virginia, learning survival skills from the mountain women in her family and community. On Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at the Salem Museum, Shifflett will describe the wild, edible weeds that can be found in this area. After her talk, she will lead participants outside to forage for these plants on the museum’s grounds. Shifflett’s Earth Day presentation is sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the Association of American University Women (AAUW) and is free and open to the public.

Community Shredding Event: In an effort to help local citizens protect themselves from identity theft, Vested Partners will host a free community shredding event on Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at its 300 E. 2nd Street office in Salem. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be provided. There will be a drawing to win a paper shredder. The event is for personal papers with a limit of three boxes or bags per person. Except for paper clips and staples, no metal or other non-paper material can be in boxes of bags brought for shredding.

71st Ernest “Pig” Robertson Fishing Rodeo: The City of Salem Parks & Recreation Department will hold the fishing rodeo for children ages 3-8 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Lake Spring Park. Additional dates include Monday, May 1 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for special needs children, Wednesday, May 3 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for nursing home residents and Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. for children ages 9-12.
2023 Mother’s Day Brunch Fundraiser: The event hosted by Salem Area Ecumenical Ministries will be on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hidden Valley Country Club. It will benefit ACT Packs for Children, Student Led Food Pantry, Summer Feed & Read and Mrs. Dorsey’s Clothes Closet.
